RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Act as the lead aquatic ecologist and technical lead for aquatic work at NSE with support from NSE’s leadership and more junior staff
Oversee and mentor more junior staff in field work, reporting, permitting, etc. for aquatic work
Conduct field work, prepare proposals, reports, permits, etc
Establish connections & build relationships to drive business development and further NSE’s professional representation in aquatic ecology
Manage tasks and a variety of projects commensurate with experience including interaction with clients, scheduling of field work and meetings, budgeting, agency liaison, etc. Project examples include:
Environmental Impact Studies/Assessments
Peer reviews
Management plans
Environmental inspections
Species at Risk
Research & Conservation
Monitoring programs
Become familiar with or leverage existing knowledge across other ecological disciplines to oversee a broad range of field programs, for example: aquatic habitat assessments, breeding bird surveys, reptile surveys, amphibian breeding surveys, vegetation surveys, tree inventories, ELC surveys, wetland evaluations (OWES), bat surveys.
Within the context of an Environmental Impact Study and/or peer review: interpret and assess conformity with environmental policy and legislation (e.g., Provincial Policy Statement, other Provincial plans relevant to natural heritage planning, Endangered Species Act, Fisheries Act, municipal official plans, etc.).
Potential to provide expert advice and participating in hearings as an expert witness.
Work in a collaborative environment where project managers support and assist each other on an as-needed basis and consistent with the overall objective of NSE collectively providing the best service to clients.
Deliver high quality reports and other project deliverables on time and within budget
Undertaking marketing initiatives and generating new work including recruiting new clients and maintaining business relationships with existing clients, procuring new projects and preparing proposals.
Contributing to periodic management meetings
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & ATTRIBUTES

Core requirements:
Degree in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Studies or a related field
Critical thinking & problem solving
Strong interpersonal skills and team-player mindset
Initiative
7+ years’ experience in related position(s) and/or demonstrated progression in responsibility and complexity of work.
Experience with and/or interest in relationship building and business development (supported by NSE leadership)
Experience with and/or interest in being both a technical ‘doer’ and leader.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in:
Aquatic habitat assessment, fish survey methods
Impact assessment for aquatic habitat and species
Mitigation measures and protections for construction and development
Assessment of fish passage and design requirements associated with various species groups
Habitat restoration and enhancement for aquatic species
Interpretation and application of relevant legislation, policy documents and acceptable field survey protocols in aquatic ecology including fish surveys
Proven project management experience in an ecological field
Proposal writing as the lead author and project manager with proven success in being awarded project work
Building new client relationships through marketing initiatives and maintaining existing client relationships
Providing expert witness advice and expert witness testimony at hearings; and
Managing multiple projects and meeting tight deadlines

The following are considered assets:
MTO Natural Environment Contract experience and RAQs certification
Business development experience; and
Experience with technical leadership and development.

Pay will be commensurate with experience and capability. NSE provides health benefits as well as other perquisites.
