Seasonal Environmental Education Assistant – Rouge Valley Foundation – Ontario

Summary of Function:
The Environmental Education Assistant will teach curriculum-linked environmental education programs to elementary, high school and college/university students at the Rouge Valley Conservation Centre. Assist in the daily operations of the Rouge Valley Conservation Centre. Deliver environmental and nature-themed lesson plans during weekend children’s programs and Summer Day Camp programs including crafts, hikes, active games and outdoor activities. Provide supervision of students, campers, volunteers and other participants. Assist with special events, hikes and other conservation centre operational needs. Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays as required. Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position.

Knowledge and Experience:
Knowledge of environmental education, terrestrial and aquatic ecology, ecosystem management, as well as species identification skills
Understanding of the role of environmental education in long term management and sustainability of ecosystems, and ecosystem management in the context of broader urban sustainability issues.
Desire to take a creative and innovative approach to communicating environmental science and ecology in educational programming
Post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies or Environmental Management, Teaching or ECE an asset.
Teaching experience within a school, camp, or outdoor education centre capacity an asset.
Experience teaching and/or leading outdoor programming, leading community-based programs and environmental activities an asset
Experience working with children with special needs (down syndrome, dyslexia, ADD, autism) is an asset.
Excellent organizational skills and task and time management capabilities.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to think both critically and strategically.
Ability to work independently and co-operatively as part of a team.
Flexibility to work flexible hours, evenings, weekends and holidays as required is mandatory.
Must have a current Police Vulnerable Sector check.
Must have Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
Tasks: Examples of Tasks

Perform the following tasks under general supervision:
As part of the teaching team at RVCC, deliver curriculum-linked education programs, weekend children’s programs, and summer day camp programs.
Learn and develop information and prepare resources for programs, activities hikes and events.
Deliver daytime, evening and weekend programs and events for all ages, and assist with other duties including preparation, set up and clean up, creation of materials, crafts, activities, and games.
Provide supervision of children (students/campers), staff and volunteers.
Assist with community events including nature walks, outreach, educational and monitoring events.
General landscaping, grounds keeping, cleaning and house keeping duties at the RVCC.
Clean, inspect, inventory, maintain/repair, transport and properly store all props, equipment, and supplies for programs and events and ensure all materials are available for daily program delivery.
Attend and participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
Other duties as assigned.
