Reports to: ReStore Operations Manager
General Accountabilities:
• Responsible for ensuring that volunteers and staff follow the policies, procedures and guidelines of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore Okanagan.
• Ensure customers and donors receive pleasant, fair and equitable treatment at all times.
• Work with the ReStore management towards the training of all staff and volunteers to enable them to competently perform their responsibilities as outlined in the ReStore policies and procedures.
• Acts with consideration to profitability for the business
Leadership Skills
An assistant manager is a leadership role, and as such, you should be prepared to troubleshoot problems in the workplace, address customers’ concerns and assist in resolving employee disputes. Maintaining a professional demeanor at all times is important. You will be expected to act as a role model to the employees and volunteers reporting to you. An assistant manager is usually in charge when a manager is unavailable, you should be prepared to step up to serve as an advocate for the organization and employees under your charge.
• As an assistant manager, you should be able to stay focused during busy times and delegate tasks to employees to keep business running smoothly. You should be able to perceive when there is an issue that will impact store operations and bring the concern to management staff for resolution.
Recruiting and training: Assistant managers are responsible for making sure new employees transition smoothly, helping employees pick up new skills and recognizing when an employees are having difficulties. As well, volunteers are the core of our work force. Habitat managers .work together with staff to ensure our volunteers have an enjoyable experience and are well-matched for the position that they have been placed.
• Being friendly and outgoing: People skills and excellent customer service are a must in this job. Not only will you interact with employees and volunteers every day, but you will also need to assist customers when they have questions, concerns or complaints. Put on a happy face and address these issues in a professional manner. Being a ‘team-player’ is also an important element for this position. We are One Habitat working together for Canadian families to have a better quality of life.
• Staying attentive: This is not a position where you can sit back, forget about the people around you and do your own thing. Your job is to be attentive to your employees and motivate them to succeed and improve. Even when it is slow, keep staff and volunteers in good spirits and always be professional with customers.
Specific Responsibilities
Store Operations:
• Process all donations in accordance with HFHO policies and procedures, priced before they are put out for sale and stocked in a timely fashion
• Directs procurement and donation retrieval through effective scheduling of resources
Cash register operation:
• End of day cash outs and night bank deposits as required.
• Tracking donations that require a tax receipt
• Competent in operations of cash systems and customer assistance
Inventory Control
• Determining the acceptability of donated product, based on ReStore Okanagan guidelines and informing customers of these guidelines
• Accepting donations into the ReStore Inventory management
• Driving truck and forklift/stacker, as required
• Loading & unloading of product
• Processing, cleaning and pricing of product
• Provide a satisfactory and supportive work environment for staff and volunteers through on-going training and coaching
Staff & Volunteer Management
• Training Volunteers & Staff of policies and procedures including the following:
o processing and pricing product
o cash register operation, product acceptance, pricing and product processing
o end of day procedures and cash out
o Scheduling staff and volunteers for ReStore
General Management
• Preparation of deposits and daily sales reports.Ensure the following forms are completed, when applicable:
o Volunteer Release Waiver & Safety Guidelines
o Volunteer Sign-In Sheets
o Incident Reports
Ensure safe operation of the ReStore at all times, including:
• Proper storage of materials
• Hazard awareness and control of possible incidents
• Reporting all incidents and hazards to ReStore Manager
• Directing staff and volunteers to ensure front of house, back house and back lot areas are clean and safe
Customer Service
• Provide excellent customer service
• Assist customers with sales and questions
• Respond to donor and customer inquiries about Habitat for Humanity Okanagan and the ReStore’s Mission
Other Regular Duties
• Ensure recycling practices are being followed
• Cleaning & maintenance duties of product and public areas as required
• Other duties and tasks, as assigned
Requirements
• Commitment to the work of HFHO and its Mission, Vision and Values
• High School diploma, or equivalent
• Minimum of 3 years work experience, including 1 year in retail sales management
• Previous experience in renovation, construction, warehouse or retail an asset
• Excellent written and verbal communication and able to express oneself with tact and diplomacy.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to providing superior customer service
• Computer literacy including Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Comfortable working in a physically demanding work environment; heavy lifting up to 50 pounds
• Steel toed footwear required
• Valid driver license with available drivers abstract; valid forklift license would be an asset
• Minimum 40 hours per week
• Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
• Availability to attend seminars, meetings, trade shows and such as demanded by the business.
