Job Description:
We are looking for a highly motivated Environmental Researcher to lead Coastal Community Science (CCS), our newly formed division of Canadian research and development. This division will take over all WFT local research and restoration projects, with a focus on addressing environmental and socio-environmental needs identified by the community with early career students, professionals and scientists, in collaboration with local institutions and NGO partners.
The CCS co-director will join our current team and supervise ongoing project of environmental assessment, monitoring, and research in the Gorge Waterway, Portage Inlet, and adjacent waters. These currently include: water quality monitoring, Olympia oyster monitoring and research, herring research, cutthroat trout habitat and stock assessment, and Coho salmon rehabilitation. All projects incorporate citizen science, collaboration with local governments, other NGOs and universities and colleges.
Working with other staff and advisors, the candidate will be responsible for supervising and developing research plans of the different projects, writing and editing reports and grant proposals, budgeting, fund development for doing the work, and community liaison. The candidate should have experience conducting field work, lab work, reporting, supervision/mentoring of others, community liaison, and successful grant writing. He/she will be a team player who is capable of working independently, and maintaining consistent and professional communication with volunteers, community groups, and co-workers. Flexibility in the candidate’s schedule is necessary to reflect the dynamic nature of this position.
Qualifications Required:
Post secondary graduate in biology, environmental studies, geography or related field; higher degree and/or professional designation beneficial
An understanding of marine ecosystems and associated monitoring and stewardship practices;
Familiarity with restoration of freshwater and marine ecosystems
Experience with self-directed research, field work, data analyses, and scientific writing;
Experience writing successful grants
Demonstrated abilitiy to work in teams in supervisory roles
Demonstrated ability to network collaboratively in a multi-institutional environment
Valid driver’s license (use of own car may be required on occasion);
First Aid certification, CPR-C, and FOODSAFE (may be provided);
Willingness to submit a Criminal Record Check.
Ability to commit to job for at least 2 years
Salary: Small NGO rates, depending on experience & subject to funding
Eligibility Criteria:
Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment; older experienced candidates will also be considered
Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
