Research Assistant – University of Alberta – Edmonton

Duties and Responsibilities
During the autumn months (mid-September to mid-December), work on this project will be based out of Courtenay, British Columbia. While on Vancouver Island, the intern will assist with field sampling activities, including equipment preparation, water sample collection, and driving to/from field sites. Work on the island will also include basic lab analyses, including water sample processing and working with basic laboratory instrumentation.
Before our departure for Vancouver Island (August to mid-September), and after our return (mid-December to January) this position will be based at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. In August, the intern will assist with field preparation and preliminary field sampling on the island. From mid-December onwards, the intern will assist with water quality analyses and data entry for the samples collected in the field.
The intern will work closely with a M.Sc. student involved in the project. Travel to Vancouver Island, and food and accommodation there, will be covered.

Knowledge and Skills
Experience with field research, sample collection, or general laboratory procedures is considered an asset
Ability to work as part of a team and complete tasks successfully is critical
The intern should be willing to hike relatively long distances with equipment and work in often inclement conditions (rain, cool weather)
The intern must be willing to adapt to changing schedules and work long hours
Field safety training will be provided at the University of Alberta

Education Required
Preference will be given to candidates with an academic background in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline.

Certifications Required
A valid class 5 Canadian driver’s license is required
Previous certifications such as WHIMIS and First Aid & CPR would be an asset
