(Regular, Part Time)

Position:  A regular, part time Program Assistant II position is available at Cowichan Lake Recreation within the Community Services Department of the Cowichan Valley Regional District.  Reporting to the Manager, Cowichan Lake Recreation and supervised by the Recreation Programmer II the Program Assistant II performs a wide variety of work related to the provision and implementation of community recreation and sports programs, activities and special events for the Cowichan Lake Recreation Division.  The work involves assisting with program leadership and administration as well as marketing and promotion including encouraging participation in programs and events.

Qualifications:  A Secondary School graduation and completion of a two-year diploma in Recreation, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  A First Aid Level I with CPR certificate, a Class 5 BC driver’s license, Serving It Right and Food Safe certificates, as well as a satisfactory criminal record check and driver abstract are required.  A Class 4 Driver’s License would be an asset.  Two (2) years of experience in a recreational leadership capacity including experience instructing and supervising staff and experience with marketing, program development, retail sales, supply management, food & beverage preparation & service.  The successful applicant will possess knowledge of:  the philosophy, principles, practices and objectives of sport and recreation as it pertains to a public recreation centre; the social, cultural, and recreational needs and interests of the area served; the operation of a variety of equipment and audio-visual equipment utilized during programs and events; and, financial transaction procedures.  The successful applicant will possess the ability to:  establish and maintain working relationships with other staff, instructors, the general public, user groups and program participants; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; assist with the planning, development, promotion and coordination of programs events and services; provide leadership and/or instruction for recreation and sport programs/activities; efficiently and accurately prepare and maintain records, reports and other materials related to operations; create imaginative and visually effective marketing materials such as posters, brochures and newsletters; work with minimal or no supervision; follow instructions as well as exercise independent judgement; effectively utilize MS Office (Word/Excel/Publisher) and software for registration, point of sale and program maintenance; accurately and efficiently process and record financial transactions including performing mathematical calculations; and, the physical ability to perform the preparation, set-up and take-down required for programs & events.

Hours of Work:  This regular, part time position is guaranteed 20 hours per week.  Hours of work are scheduled based on operational need and may include a variety of shifts including daytime & evenings on weekdays & weekends.

Salary:  This position is unionized (USW Local 1-1937) with a probationary wage rate of $22.56 and a regular wage rate of $24.12 per hour (January 1, 2016 rates).  A competitive package including vacation and benefits are included.
