Program Assistant – Food Stash Foundation

About the Role
The focus of this position is to aid our Rescued Food Box and Pedal to Plate programs, ensuring programs run smoothly and we can achieve sustainable growth over time. The successful candidate will play an instrumental role in helping us reach our goal of supporting over 100 families each week. Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Program Assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean workspace and sanitized materials, as well as overseeing four volunteer shifts each week. Their week is structured as follows:
1) Food Sorting (Mondays, 1:00PM – 5:00PM)
Guide volunteers in sorting surplus food and track compost weight
Clean workspace and organize storage as needed, setting the foundation for a successful week ahead!
2) Rescued Food Box driver pickup (Tuesdays, 3:30PM – 6:30PM)
Meet and greet volunteer drivers with their scheduled Rescued Food boxes
Sanitize cooler bags and ice packs drivers bring back from previous deliveries
3) Rescued Food Box driver pickup & Food Sorting (Wednesdays, 3:30PM – 8:30PM)
Regular driver pickup shift as indicated above between 4-6PM followed by:
Lead a food sorting shift with volunteers from 6:00-8:00PM
Cleanup thereafter
4) Pedal to Plate Food Boxing, partner pickup and warehouse tasks (Thursdays, 8:30AM-12:30PM)
Guide and lead volunteers in lovingly boxing up pre-sorted food to be delivered to Pedal to Plate program members
Facilitate City Reach pickup of pre-sorted surplus food
Cleanup thereafter
5) Pedal to Plate cyclist pickup (Fridays, 11:30AM-3:00PM)
Greet Shift Delivery Coop cyclists with their scheduled Pedal to Plate boxes
Sanitize totes, insulation and ice packs they bring back from previous deliveries
Clean and tidy workspace and walk-in fridges as needed to close a successful week!
Education & Experience Requirements
Completion of high school diploma or equivalent
Food Safe Certification required (can be completed upon offer of employment)
Emergency First Aid & CPR, an asset

This role is right for you if you are:
Exceptionally organized, an excellent communicator and problem-solver, and able to lead tasks independently while being part of a cohesive and passionate team!
Interested in learning more about local food systems, food recovery, and sustainability
Able to comfortably lift up to 50 pounds and complete labour intensive tasks – this role includes lifting and moving boxes of food regularly!
Thrive when you’re working and connecting with people – you will be leading various volunteer sessions (1 to 4 volunteers per in-house shift)
Take initiative to complete cleaning tasks as the arise, appreciating the importance of sanitation and health and safety
Self-motivated, passionate and have outstanding interpersonal skills
