The position:
Ecosource is seeking an enthusiastic, creative and organized individual to facilitate the PEYA project, which involves supporting the student Executive Committee of PEYA to develop and maintain a youth-directed environmental network in Peel Region. The network offers peer support and participates in action campaigns in collaboration with community partners with a focus on addressing local impacts of climate change. This position is grounded in principles of youth empowerment and applies an anti-oppression framework to youth-led environmental action. Due to COVID-19, this program will be run virtually until it is safe to facilitate in-person programming.
Responsibilities
Collaborate virtually with community partners and youth members to organize climate change-focused workshops and events for youth in the Region of Peel.
Liaise online with PEYA’s community partners on program development and delivery.
Support the PEYA Executive Committee in building environmental knowledge base and leadership skills.
Develop and deliver evaluative tools and techniques to measure program impact on climate change education and adaptation.
Facilitate regular communication with PEYA’s membership through the e-newsletter, social media streams and the PEYA website.
Facilitate outreach events, networking meetings and educational workshops delivered by PEYA, both virtually and in-person once it is deemed safe for public health.
Facilitate large-scale events (either in-person or through an online platform), such as the EcoBuzz Conference and the Amazing Green Race to provide opportunities for youth to become climate change and environmental leaders in their school communities.
Deliver and facilitate PEYA Executive and member training virtually.
Act as a representative of PEYA and Ecosource to media and at community meetings.
Assist with other Ecosource programs as required and represent the core values of Ecosource.
Qualifications
Due to funding requirements, the successful candidate MUST be under the age of 31 and meet all eligibility criteria for ECO Canada’s Science Horizons Internship Program.
Post-secondary education in environmental studies, education, science, technology, engineering, math or related field or equivalent work, volunteer and/or lived experience.
Experience and enthusiasm in working with youth aged 13-24 to support positive environmental change.
Strong knowledge of local environmental issues in the Region of Peel.
Strong belief in creating social and environmental change through community education.
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and anti-oppression principles and an understanding of environmental justice and its connection to sustainability.
Experience with in-school, student-led environmental actions; knowledge of best practices in youth engagement and demonstrated ability to facilitate effective youth-adult partnerships and support youth-initiated environmental action.
Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, and computer skills including all MS Office software applications and proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
Excellent networking and public speaking skills.
Experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube) and website (WordPress) maintenance.
Familiarity with the City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel is considered an asset, as is experience working with other diverse communities and the non-profit sector.
Valid driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle for transportation.
Application Information
This is a one-year, full-time (35 hours per week) contract position starting September 2020 and ending August 2021. Frequent evening and weekend work will be required. Annual salary is $40,000 and a comprehensive benefits package is offered. A Police Record Check will be required upon hiring.
