Part-time Store Donation Attendant – Sherwood Park – Goodwill Industries

Position Type: Part-time hourly (22.5 hours or less per week)

Work Schedule: Weekday, Weekends, Evenings

Reports To: Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager and Store Supervisor

Job Summary
The Store Donation Attendant Associate primarily works in the processing area of the store receiving donations from donors. Donations are then sorted and distributed to appropriate areas for detailed processing. There is a high degree of customer contact in this area. Donor Attendant Associates are expected to work effectively with others by maintaining positive, team-oriented relationships and communicating effectively with others.

A Store Donor Attendant Associate will be assigned to perform one or more of the following functions.

Opening Duties
Check the premises for items left overnight; bring them inside before opening the site.

Clear the exterior of the donation area to ensure customer and worker safety as related to trips, slips or falls.

Ensure exterior donation area is kept clear and safe throughout all opening hours.

Place out any signage and ensure all log tally sheets, etc. are prepared for entry.

Put out service bell (or similar).
Receiving Donations and Customer Service Duties

Welcome donors to Goodwill with a smile and within ten (10) seconds of their arrival.

Carry or assist with donations from vehicles into the building.

Redirect furniture donations to the furniture receiving door or to the next closest site.

Notify donor of what can and cannot be accepted; explain why donations must be refused.

Sincerely thank donors for their contribution.

Complete all paperwork as required.
Processing Donation Duties

Place donations in designated storage area for sorting.

Sort donations into designated bins after (not during the donor visit) the donor leaves.

Fill totes to a maximum of ten (10) kgs (22 pounds) and stack them only four (4) high.

Remove soiled, broken, incomplete or excessively worn donations for salvage/garbage.

Remove sharp or hazardous materials and store in a safe area; notify supervisor who will move the dangerous material.

Use appropriate equipment, personal protective equipment and tools (dollies, box cutters, etc.) and follow all safety guidelines for equipment and tools.

Distribute donations to the appropriate processing locations.
Material Movement

Assist with the furniture loading and unloading.

Assist truck drivers with unloading and loading trucks.

Assist moving all donation materials within the processing area.
Cleaning Duties

Mop and/or sweep donor area as often as needed to ensure a safe environment for both donors and workers at all times.

Break down cardboard and deposit into cardboard storage/salvage area.

Empty and move garbage.

Shovel, spread ice melt or sand and/or sweep exterior of donor drop-off area.
Closing Duties
Check entire site for loose donations and/or garbage at the end of each day.
Ensure garbage bin is secure at the end of every day.
When closing, bring in sandwich board and lock doors.
Complete paperwork as required.
Bring in service bell (or similar).
Other duties as assigned.
Health and Safety Duties

accurately complete all incident and WCB reports in a timely fashion as required.

demonstrate commitment to the establishment of accessible, healthy and safe facilities by modeling protocol and participating in all existing programs.
understand and adhere to GIA Health and Safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
ensure compliance with all Health and Safety legislation, laws and regulations relevant to work.

Other Duties
Store Donation Attendant Associates work in a multi-functional environment and may at any time be asked to move to assist in other areas or to perform functions outside of their regular duties.
Store Donation Attendant Associates are also required to participate in any training or meeting function as requested by GIA.

Qualifications
Experience and Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Previous experience working with the public is an asset.

Requirements
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must pass a criminal record check.
Must be eligible to work in Canada.
Must have sufficient command of the English language or be willing to participate in an English as a second language course.
Dependability and reliability is required as well as the ability to work alone or unsupervised.
Ability to work a flexible schedule (including weekend and evenings).
As this position requires lifting, sorting and moving donations, candidates must be able to regularly lift in excess of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and perform physical work on a continual basis.
Basic mathematical and written English skills to maintain reports.
Responsible for own transportation to and from work.
