Role Overview
Mentoring under our Curator – Marine Biologist and Programs Manager, this dynamic role will combine the technical skills of animal husbandry and system maintenance with delivering environmental education programs to school children, and leading aquarium educational interpretive tours to visitors.
Primary Duties
Supporting the Curator – Marine Biologist with the operation of our community aquarium – monitoring animal health, feeding, system maintenance, animal collections and release.
Leading educational interpretive tours to the public and groups.
Supporting and leading the delivery of school programs.
Support with the development of educational programming.
Providing customer service and support to all visitors, students, and teachers.
Maintaining a good working knowledge of marine animals, ecosystems, and issues.
Supervising volunteers or support staff as required.
Provides excellent customer service and support to all visitors, campers, students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
Communicating effectively with management and staff in a timely fashion.
Tracking and maintaining program records as required.
Additional Duties
Represent NSMEC at special events in the community.
Animal feeding (fish and invertebrates) and habitat cleaning.
Routine cleaning to maintain the appearance of our facility, interpretive panels, and materials.
Animal collection field work.
Other duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Currently enrolled in post-secondary education in an applicable field such as biological science, marine biology, environmental studies, education studies.
Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or resident with refugee status (funding requirement)
Valid first-aid certification (may receive after employment)
A clear criminal record check for working with vulnerable populations (may receive after employment)
Experience working with children, ideally in a leadership and/or educator capacity.
Experience in leading groups and/or public speaking.
Experience handling marine organisms.
Knowledge of local intertidal and subtidal marine species and ecology.

Excellent interpretive and teaching skills.
Solid communication skills, both verbal and written.
Able to communicate effectively with audiences of all ages, personalities and learning abilities.

Keen awareness of surroundings for safety reasons.
Enthusiastic, creative, flexible, and energetic with excellent customer service skills.
Ability to learn, adapt, multitask in a constantly changing environment.
Work Conditions
Job requires the ability to stand, walk, and be on your feet for extended periods of time.
A love of children is essential as you will be working with groups of children that have varied skills and abilities.
Exposure to variable weather conditions.
Some work offsite: at nearby beaches, parks, and trails.
Ability to live on the Sunshine Coast for the duration of the position.
Flexibility and availability in schedule are necessary.
A vehicle & drivers license may be an asset.
