HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours/week* SALARY: $23.62 – $27.74 per hour
The Library Assistant (LA) III works with the LAIV and under direction of the manager of public services in the training and supervision of library assistants and shelving staff. This position is responsible for the smooth operation of circulation desk functions in the absence of the LAIV by responding to customer complaints, overseeing circulation activities, and trouble-shooting building issues and equipment failures. As an integral part of the circulation team the LAIII reviews and makes suggestions for the Circulation Desk Procedures Manual, communicates with other circulation and public service staff in a professional and timely manner, and participates in planning and successfully implementing changes or additions to library services.
Scope of work also includes regular shifts on the circulation and inquiry desks assisting patrons find, borrow, or reserve library materials; excellent customer service and using tact and discretion to resolve patron conflict and explaining library policy.
Assigned off-desk duties may include, but are not limited to, processing interlibrary loans, maintaining displays, assisting patrons registered for home library service or taped/daisy books, creating publicity or information materials for the public, monitoring and refreshing supplies, or participating in the preparation of library purchases.
This position also assists the LAIV with scheduling, maintaining equipment in operational order (and arranging for services as required), maintaining and updating records, compiling statistics, preparing reports, and other related duties.
Requirements include:
Completion of Grade 12.
3 years experience working in a public library.
Able to communicate effectively and courteously with staff, supervisors, and the public.
Able to provide direction and leadership.
Possess excellent work habits such as time management and organizational skills.
Approach tasks thoroughly and efficiently.
Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft desk applications such as Word and Excel with a high degree of efficiency.
Experience working with Horizon, including a good understanding of, and ability to search bibliographic and membership records.
Comfortable using internet-based resources, and possess a general understanding of databases.
Library Technician Diploma or course work in Library services desirable.
*The typical work week for this position is Tuesday to Saturday with one evening shift, but this may change to help cover vacation leaves and other staff shortages.
