Indigenous Knowledge Holder – Coastal Restoration Society – Vancouver Island

Job Overview
The Indigenous Water Conservation and Restoration Education Initiative (IWCREI) is a new project that emerged from conversations between Indigenous communities and Coastal Restoration Society (CRS). This project aims to meet the needs of coastal Indigenous communities for a marine and aquatic focused conservation and restoration training program which centers Indigenous science and knowledge. The benefits of this project extend beyond the Nations and students directly involved and aims to improve water conservation efforts across the sector while improving co-management of marine and aquatic spaces.
CRS is looking for Indigenous Knowledge Holders interested in developing this program. Our aim is to build a collaborative team who will meet frequently to identify priorities and share knowledge ensuring collective goals and needs are met throughout the development and implementation of the project. Course material and program design will be co-created by Knowledge Holders and industry experts to create a holistic and comprehensive educational package guided by Indigenous knowledge. In years 2 and 3 of the project, 32 future Indigenous land stewards will be funded to participate in this training. Employment opportunities for instructors for this training will be made available to Indigenous Knowledge holders as well.

Job Responsibilities and Duties
Attend bi-monthly in-person and/or virtual workshops and meetings to contribute to course development
Independently source resources/perform research for course development, where necessary
Review course material and provide feedback
Ideal Candidate
Interest and awareness of Indigenous land stewardship and/or environmental conservation/restoration
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to give recommendations/instruction
Punctual, reliable and well organized
Enthusiastic and positive attitude

Required Experience
Demonstrated wisdom in areas of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)/Indigenous Knowledge as recognized by their Nation/Band/Community and/or Family inclusive of demonstrated knowledge and ability to promote Indigenous protocols and ceremonies.
Environmental background/knowledge preferred.
Assets
Experience working on restoration/conservation projects
Experience working on/with marine and aquatic ecosystems
