Green Facility Horticulture Assistant – Pacific Northwest Raptors Ltd.

This is a contract
funded position for an applicant under thirty years of age, and qualified applicants must have a diploma or degree in a science field. See eco.ca for more details on qualifications (you can be pre-approved for Eco Canada funding via their website).
Working directly with our Director and facility managers, your daily tasks would include:
Assist with day to day care of the working farm such as animal care (non-raptors; pigs, llamas etc) and food production (quail, chickens, ducks, honey, and produce).
Daily crop and garden task (especially in spring/summer) such as crop planning, planting, weeding, irrigation, greenhouse management/care, landscaping, and harvesting.
General maintenance & care of the farm including (but not limited to); fence & building repair, barn management, supply management.
Making recommendations and implementing more energy efficient & green methods of crop production (such as chemical free methods of suppressing weeds, maximizing water usage etc).

On-going initiatives include:
Improving all aspects of growing and cultivation on the farm (environmentally friendly crop management, organization of planting and harvesting)
Assisting with design and implementation of new garden beds around the farm (bee/butterfly garden, herb garden).
Assisting with design and implementation of demonstration gardens and various other eco-friendly initiatives at the Raptors facility
Education on environmental friendly growing initiatives within staff and community
Working with other organizations in the community

The suitable Candidate would have:
(Required for funding): A 2 year diploma or degree in a STEM field (ideal fields of study include; Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, Agriculture, etc).
Experience/knowledge in green/sustainable farming and building
Farming experience (including crop and animal care, use of equipment, etc.)
Ability to be adaptable to working on multiple projects
Some experience in building/construction an asset
Strong work ethic
Passion for environmental conservation and green methods of cultivation.
Passion for wildlife and wildlife friendly farming practices
Exceptional candidates may also possess the following:

First aid training and experience
Outdoor field skills
Public speaking and/or education experience.
Farm management experience
Animal breeding/rearing experience
Produce marketing experience (e.g. Farmers Market or similar)
