Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Work closely with an assigned biologist to perform standard methods and protocols including the field/laboratory analysis of samples and specimens such as measurement or determination of biological, chemical or physical parameters, and the operation of manual or automated analytical instrumentation.
DNA and RNA extractions, normalization, fish dissections, labelling and sampling preparation, and molecular assays (qPCR)
Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment and instrumentation during projects and assisting in their modification, adaptation, testing and calibration to meet specific requirements.
Work in compliance with chemical and biological safety as well as safe practices ensuring compliance with ISO 17025 standards
Sample inventory organization, data entry, QA/QC, analysis, and summary results as required.
Other duties as required of this position.
Qualifications and Competencies:
Recent graduate in a degree program with a specialization in biochemistry/ molecular biology/ microbiology/ genetics or equivalent demonstrated related technical laboratory experience.
Experience working in a laboratory environment or documented laboratory experience in molecular biology.
WHMIS training. First Aid training would be beneficial
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Working knowledge of bioinformatics software and statistical analysis.
Working knowledge of PCR and qPCR.
Knowledge of principles of RNA and DNA handling and extraction.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written communications in English
Experience using Excel and Word.
Other Requirements
Punctuality and reliability are required.
Willingness to relocate temporarily to Nanaimo BC, as well as travel when necessary
Willingness to work on weekends and overtime where necessary
Worksite safety regulations must be adhered to at all times, and technicians must demonstrate a good work ethic.
Must be able to pass a criminal record check with fingerprinting, and security clearance.
Familiarity with the Okanagan culture, history, and language is an asset and preference will be given to qualified applicants of Okanagan Aboriginal ancestry.
Hours: Full time 40 hours per week. A pension and benefits package is attached to the position.
Location and Training: This position is based in Penticton BC. The position will require comprehensive training using Fluidigm BioMarkTM technology which will require the successful candidate to temporarily re-locate to Nanaimo, BC.
