Position Overview
We are seeking a Director at Large who will contribute to the OSEE Board by:
Attending monthly board meetings, providing insight and strategic direction for the short and long term growth of OSEE’s work
Providing specialised expertise on behalf of OSEE in the form of reviewing and giving feedback to Ontario Curriculum through an EE, and equity-oriented lens, including:
Coordinating and writing responses to occasional invitations from the Ministry of Ontario to review certain areas of curriculum
Calling upon OSEE members to support curriculum feedback and give insight to areas in need of improvement
Attending the OTF Curriculum Forum (OTFCF) – which may be online in 2021 – typically folks meet three times a year, fall, winter (2 day retreat) and spring
Looking for avenues for advocating for the further advancement and embedment of EE across Ontario curricula (at all grade levels)
Advocating on behalf on Ontario teachers to create avenues for further EE training which build comfort and confidence in taking learning outside, and connecting learning to the environment
Attending online events and workshops which support the goal of advancing equity in education, and to the outdoors
Supporting teachers to arm themselves with Ministry policy which highlights EE and equity in the outdoors
Commitment (ongoing)
Attend 9-10 online Board meetings per year, once a month in the evening
Attend the AGM and a one day in-person, or online planning retreat in late Summer / early Fall (pending COVID-19 health and safety guidelines)
When applicable, plan, (co)facilitate and synthesize OSEE member feedback to invitations to review curriculum
Roughly a total of 5-7 hours per month
Benefits of joining the OSEE’s board
All board positions are volunteer-based. There are a number of ways as volunteers that we grow and benefit through experiences gained, as we work together to further advance EE towards becoming embedded in the Ontario school system. We encourage board members to put their energy and skills towards areas and projects which they are passionate about, and which may also advance skills-sets and expertise. We are able to offer each board member a small amount of PD money, which we encourage folks to use towards expanding one’s knowledge and experience in relation to equity in environmental education, and the outdoors.
Skills & Experience
A passion for supporting the advancement of environmental education across Ontario, and building capacity and community between teachers
Previous Board experience, familiarity with Ontario curriculum and EE policies, comfort in leading group facilitation, advocacy skills, and strong writing skills are preferred
Membership with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) is required
The ability to expand our organization’s impact to support EE for french language teachers and learners is an asset, but not required
