Development Officer, Major Gifts and Legacy Giving – Sierra Club BC – Victoria

ABOUT THE ROLE
Sierra Club BC is recruiting for a dynamic Major Gifts and Legacy Giving Officer, who will bring a values-based approach in stewarding an assigned portfolio of major and planned giving prospects to advance Sierra Club BC’s strategic plan. Working directly with donors, staff, and members of the board, the position reports to the Executive Director and plays a key role in increasing the resources and impact of our expanding organization. The Major Gifts and Legacy Giving Officer will be deeply committed to the vision laid out in our strategic plan, bringing their unique skills to bear in maintaining relationships of learning and trust with long-standing and prospective major donors.
Sierra Club BC maintains a largely remote work environment; however, the successful candidate must be based in BC and is ideally located in either the Greater Victoria or Metro Vancouver areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Bring your unique perspective and lived experience to our Development team, which includes our Annual Giving Officer, Digital Systems Coordinator, Grants Coordinator, and Membership Services Coordinator.
Nurture and grow the major gifts and planned giving portfolios, meeting or exceeding monthly and annual revenue targets by building meaningful, engaging relationships with donors.
Plan and manage engagement journeys for major donors and planned giving, stewarding individuals through the complete development cycle (prospecting, acquisition, solicitation, stewardship, and retention).
Key contributor in developing and executing our annual development plan, alongside the Executive Director, Development, Communications, Programs and Education teams.
Collaborate closely with the Annual Giving Officer in cultivating our mid-level to major pipeline to align touch-points and ensure smooth relationship transfer.
Work alongside Communications staff and Annual Giving Officer to curate compelling development-related content for multiple communication channels.
Strategically and judiciously call upon key staff (Executive Director, Director of Campaigns and Programs, program leads) to meet annual fundraising goals.
With the Member Services Coordinator, ensure gift acknowledgements and receipts are accurate, courteous, and timely.
Strategize with and provide support to third-party, contracted fundraisers.
With the Finance team, ensure accurate tracking and recording of all major and planned gifts.
Serve on the Board’s Fundraising Committee, and support (as needed) the Finance Committee.

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum five years of proven success in fund development.
Minimum of two years’ demonstrated experience securing major gifts between $10,000 and $500,000.
Experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating development plans.
Deep commitment to Sierra Club BC’s values and theory of change and ability to convey persuasively to current and prospective donors.
A willingness to travel within the province to meet with donors one-on-one.
Excellent listening skills and commitment to matching donor interests, while holding true to the organization’s strategic plan and mission.
Fastidious tracking of touch point communications.
Maintaining confidentiality and the ability to be discreet is a must.
Sound knowledge of CRA rules and regulations pertaining to charitable giving, event-related fundraising, tax receipting, and best practices of ethical fundraising.
Working knowledge and keen interest in current and evolving trends in charitable giving.
Proven budget management experience.
Strong computer skills including CRM (Salesforce preferred), marketing automation, Word, Excel, and cloud-based file management.
Leadership and people skills in fostering and thriving in a participatory, team-oriented environment.
Experience working in intercultural contexts and upholding JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) principles.

COMPENSATION
This is a five days per week (37.5 hours) position, with a starting pay rate of $84,357 – $100,425.
Annual increases within salary range; salary range subject to annual cost of living adjustments.
Initial four weeks of paid vacation, with scheduled increases to five weeks; additional paid time off while the office is closed over holiday period.
