Deputy Director, Parks & Public Spaces – City of North Vancouver – North Vancouver

ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the City Engineer, and leading a team of talented and dedicated professionals, the Deputy Director, Parks and Public Spaces will be a senior member of the departmental leadership team and a provider of support and direction to a broad range of departmental and organizational initiatives. The Deputy Director will oversee a variety of functions that are focused on creating and activating public spaces to maximize the enjoyment for our residents and visitors through planning, design, implementation, operation and maintenance of parks, plazas, streets and natural areas. The Deputy Director will help establish a brand for our waterfront and award-winning Shipyards and oversee the implementation of the City’s Mobility Strategy and forthcoming Climate and Environment Strategy.
The successful candidate will be an accredited design professional or professional engineer with more than ten (10) years of progressive related management and administrative experience within a municipal or regional government setting or as a consultant within the urban design and place making sector and with work of comparable operational complexity. The ideal candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills and bring an understanding of managing a portfolio to balance cost efficiencies with meeting the diverse needs of various stakeholders. The successful candidate will bring a collaborative, progressive and innovative approach to problem-solving and an ability to form partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders to define and implement projects. Working collaboratively with other City departments is critical to success, with a high degree of tact, diplomacy, political sensitivity, and sensitivity to community issues. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A current Police Information Check and valid BC Class 5 driver’s license are required.
