The Position:
TEA is looking for a Campaigner who is passionate about environmental issues and engaging the public, and who wants to be part of a small, collaborative and fun team. We want someone who understands how change happens politically and socially, and how to design and run campaigns and initiatives that will make a real difference to communities.
TEA’s campaigners are strategic thinkers who can work with elected officials and communities to develop solutions, speak to the media, engage allies across multiple sectors, and mobilize public support for action on Toronto’s top environmental issues. They see how researching best practices, amplifying success stories and testing solutions can accelerate local climate action. They understand the importance of engaging people where they live and building local power to strengthen civic engagement and build a greener city for all.
TEA is dedicated to ensuring Toronto implements climate action strategies that reduce emissions, bring social and economic benefits, address intersecting issues like housing and poverty, and help frontline communities facing the greatest impacts from climate change. TEA also advocates for stronger plans to build community resilience to climate impacts like extreme heatwaves and floods. As TEA’s Climate Campaigner, you’ll help lead innovative campaigns and community-based projects that develop local solutions and build strong political will and public support for ambitious and equitable climate action.

Responsibilities:
The Campaigner will be responsible for campaign and project activities, and will:
Work with the Campaigns Director to develop campaign objectives and effective strategies to achieve them
Lead efforts to mobilize the public to voice support for strong, sustained climate action with ongoing funding at the municipal level
Monitor and lead TEA’s climate policy input at the municipal and provincial levels
Lead campaign and project implementation, including work planning, collaborating with staff to meet deliverables and managing budgets
Develop campaign outreach strategies to deepen engagement with supporters and stakeholders and engage new people in TEA’s climate work in different parts of the city
Work with City Councillors and City staff to develop climate solutions and programs
Represent TEA at relevant network and coalition tables both within and outside the environmental movement, and build new coalitions as needed
Collaborate with other TEA campaigners and staff on cross-campaign goals
Act as a media spokesperson on municipal climate change issues and generate ongoing media interest in campaigns and projects
Work with the Communications Manager to develop communications strategies that creatively communicate climate change and climate justice issues
Create content to support TEA’s climate change work including digital actions, petitions, e-blasts, reports, presentations, workshops, media releases, and blog posts
Write funding proposals and reports to funders
Recruit, train and manage junior staff to help meet campaign goals
Support special projects that will assist TEA in meeting its organizational goals

Qualifications:
In-depth knowledge of climate change and climate justice issues, including climate change mitigation and resilience
Strong commitment to environmental justice and anti-oppression, and experience integrating equity into climate change work
Experience organizing with diverse communities of people across Toronto
Experience working with a team to develop and implement successful campaign strategies
Ability to speak and write effectively for the public, policymakers, government stakeholders, and advocacy allies, and knowledge of these different audiences
Working knowledge of policy processes and experience with policy research and analysis
Experience engaging policymakers and elected officials (either professionally or as a volunteer), preferably at the municipal level
Experience building partnerships and coalitions across sectors
Strong multi-tasking and project management skills
Experience in digital campaigning
Experience with developing and implementing project budgets
Some media relations experience would be an asset
Experience with writing funding proposals and managing grants would be an asset

Terms of Employment:
This is a full-time permanent position. Compensation is $60,000 per year with annual increases based on a salary grid system. TEA offers health benefits and generous vacation provisions.
The Campaigner may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.
Currently, work-from-home arrangements are in place due to COVID-19. Proof of vaccination is a condition of employment in accordance with TEA’s legal obligations to ensure the health and safety of employees. This condition is subject to our duty to accommodate under the Ontario Human Rights Code.
