Boreal Program Outreach Assistant
CPAWS Northern Alberta is seeking an enthusiastic, environmentally focused person for a short-term internship as the Chapter’s Boreal Program Outreach Assistant. Reporting to the Executive Director and the Boreal Program Manager, the Outreach Assistant will perform the following duties in support of building awareness of conservation issues and opportunities in Northern Alberta:
Assist the Boreal Program Manager and the Communications Coordinator with community outreach and communications related to CPAWS Northern Alberta’s Boreal Conservation Program, particularly with respect to our collaborations on Indigenous-led conservation projects
Coordinate and lead online or in-person outreach and education activities related to boreal conservation in northern Alberta
Assist the Communications Coordinator in developing engaging online content and social media posts
Collaborate with subject-expert staff members on outreach event planning, campaign development, and communications content
Assist the Boreal Program Manager with meeting logistics and follow-up for collaborations with Indigenous communities and conservation organizations and community groups
Duties will be prioritized depending on workload and may change as you work with the Executive Director and Boreal Program Manager to determine CPAWS Northern Alberta’s Boreal Program outreach priorities.
Qualifications:
Meet eligibility criteria for Science Horizons funding (graduates under the age of 30)
Post-secondary education in biology, environmental sciences, or a related field, preferably with knowledge of conservation issues in Northern Alberta
Experience with coordinating events
Familiarity with public campaigns, particularly on environmental issues
Excellent communicator, with experience presenting, editing and writing
Comfortable with public speaking and enjoys interacting with the public
Must be capable of responding quickly and flexibly to changing events and assignments
Strong interpersonal skills including an ability and passion for developing and fostering enduring relationships with communities, governments, and the non-profit sector
Enthusiastic, collaborative attitude, and strong interest in working with technical staff to break down and present complex topics in approachable and engaging ways for the public
Previous experience working in, or collaborating with, Indigenous communities in Northern Alberta is an asset
Availability to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends, as required
The position can be remote, but availability to meet and attend events in-person in Edmonton when needed is required

This position funded by a grant from the Government of Canada’s Science Horizons Funding disbursed through the Clean Foundation.
The position is a seven-month, 35 hours/week internship, at a rate of $20/hour.
