B!KE is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated, and organized educator to join our team. We are a registered non-profit that offers a variety of bicycle related educational programming and utilizes a social enterprise model to help fund our work. Primary responsibilities of our Program Coordinator will include: delivering our Open Shop Program, Pedal Power, and our Earn-A-Bike programs. Job Details: 28 hours per week, $18 per hour. Three-year contract with three-month probationary period. Start Date: February 8th, 2016
Purpose of the Position:
To deliver a variety of educational programs on bicycle maintenance, repair, and riding
Plan, facilitate, and monitor community, in-school, and youth programming
Support and develop social enterprise operations
Train and mentor youth and volunteers
Plan and assist the delivery of special events and programs
Responsibilities:
• Facilitate the Open Shop program, teaching bicycle maintenance and mechanical skills
• Deliver program and supervise support staff in Pedal Power program
• Implement youth and adult Earn-A-Bike programs
• Develop and implement reviews and surveys of programs, and work to strengthen programs based on community feedback
• Self-organize and self-motivate to work productively
• Work with volunteers, fostering participation and engagement
• Mentor youth in adopting leadership roles within appropriate program areas
• Develop program and event plans which are financially viable
• Act as a community liaison for bicycle related events and resources
• Work to provide educational opportunities in a way that is friendly and accessible
• Communicate promptly and effectively with fellow staff and volunteers
Qualifications:
• Strong, demonstrable knowledge and experience in bicycle mechanics, or an excellent aptitude for mechanical processes and a deep interest in bicycles
• Two or more years of demonstrated experience as a youth or adult educator and/or as an employee or volunteer in a similar bicycle collective project
• Excellent organizational skills, motivation, and ability to work productively without direct supervision
• Excellent planning skills and creative vision, coupled with the ability to get things done
• A personal approach to your work, teaching in a way that is engaging, respectful, and fun
• Experience working in the field of social justice, with some knowledge of anti-oppression principles
• Current vulnerable sector background check
• Proficiency in use of computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Word Press, and complete basic design in Photoshop/ Illustrator/ or other comparable software, as well as a willingness to learn to work with GoogleDocs, Lightspeed Retail, Open Office, MailChimp, and Survey Monkey.
Assets
• Can-Bike or League of American Bicyclist’s certified cycling instructor
• Experience in the development of promotional materials such as fliers, brochures, and posters
• Experience in the management and/or operation of a retail business
• Drivers license and access to a vehicle
Supplementary Notes:
Physical Demands
Must possess mobility to work in the shop, including ability to use fine motor skills, lift objects weighing up to 50lbs), navigate stairs and the basement; operate a bicycle; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone.
Environmental Elements
Employees work primarily in a workshop environment with moderate noise levels and controlled temperature conditions, less frequently employees work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Employees may be required to work outside of normal work hours such as evenings, early mornings, and/or weekends.
