Field Manager, Organic Market Garden, 2016 Season – Fertile Ground Farm – Waterloo, Ontario

Our Farm

Fertile Ground is an organic vegetable farm located just 15 minutes west of Waterloo. We grow a wide variety of vegetables for our 150 share CSA, local cafes and a Buying Club. We are committed to community-building and drawing people into the story of their food. We have an active volunteer base, wonderfully supportive CSA members, and are always looking for ways to create opportunities for community interaction and involvement.

Our farm is 100 acres, including 10 acres of garden (with 4 in vegetable production annually), 40 acres hay for our partner mixed livestock farm, and 60-100 pastured laying hens. We have 2 seedling greenhouses and one tomato high tunnel. Although we do a lot of hand work, we have a Farmall 656 and Super A that we use for primary and in-row cultivation.

Our crew includes the lead farmer (Angie Koch), Field Manager, interns, part time staff and volunteers. Some live on site, some commute.

Requirements & Responsibilities

To apply for the Field Manager position, you must have at least 1 (and preferably more) full season’s experience on an ecological vegetable farm, as well as strong people management and efficient field skills. Working closely with the lead farmer, the Field Manager will develop responsibility for managing and inspiring the intern/volunteer crew in the field: leading harvests, problem-solving, doing quality control, and generally ensuring that harvest, post-production handling, chicken care, and maintenance systems are maintained. Must have quick hands, positive attitude, a cool head, and ability to see tasks through from start to finish. Tractor experience and skill with tools & equipment are valuable assets. Responsibilities will include:

taking part in all aspects of farmwork including planting, weeding, pest control, infrastructure management, livestock chores (laying hens), harvesting, distribution and marketing
providing leadership and quality control for work crews of interns and volunteers
daily task list management, in collaboration with head farmer
facilitating a positive and efficient work environment
supporting the lead farmer in task prioritization and problem-solving

Remuneration $2300-3000/mth, depending on experience. 50-55hr work week, April – November 15 (7.5 months). Although we generally work a 5 day work week, some evening and weekend work is required for chores (chickens, greenhouses, irrigation etc). Room available for rent in the farmhouse – priority will be given to candidates interested in living on site.
