Community Projects Manager – HASTe BC – Vancouver

HASTe (the Hub for Active School Travel) is seeking a qualified candidate for the dynamic role of Community Projects Manager.

Background

HASTe is British Columbia’s leading Active and Safe Routes to School programmer and resource centre. We are the Hub for Active School Travel (HASTe) and work with communities and partners across the province to connect kids, schools and communities through walking and cycling. We are looking to hire a qualified full-time project manager with a passion for community development work and promoting active travel. The candidate will work alongside HASTe’s core staff to help manage a growing team, organization and movement.

Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) is a movement that encourages the use of active modes of transportation, such as walking and cycling, to get to and from school. School Travel Planning (STP) is a community-based ASRTS strategy that works to uncover the transportation challenges faced by school communities, and identify the resources and strategies necessary to overcome them.

Position Summary

The primary role of the Community Projects Manager is to promote and manage HASTe’s work in School Travel Planning across British Columbia. The Community Projects Manager will reach out to and collaborate with community stakeholders throughout the province to raise awareness of Active and Safe Routes to school, and encourage and support the implementation of STP and complementary programming. The Community Projects Manager also develops and manages STP and other ASRTS projects as required: tailoring HASTe’s models to meet local interests and needs; engaging community stakeholders; and hiring, training, managing and mentoring local facilitators and staff to effectively implement HASTe’s programming. Finally, the Community Projects Manager is one-third of HASTe’s core staff team, which collectively directs and manages the organization and its work.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Management

Manage several concurrent projects, including development, implementation, evaluation, and reporting.
Develop project scopes and plans to manage time, resources and other requirements effectively.
Oversee employee and contractor hiring, training and coordination.
Track employee progress, and develop and adjust work strategies to ensure strategic objectives and deliverables are met effectively and efficiently.
Work collaboratively with a broad range of groups and organizations.
Develop and maintain working relationships with clients and partners, including municipalities, school districts, schools, and community, regional and provincial organizations.
Manage conflicts and setbacks with tact, respect, and professionalism.

Community Engagement

Coordinate HASTe’s outreach and promotional efforts through social media, public speaking engagements, conference and workshop attendance, etc.

Facilitate connections and relationships between government agencies and stakeholder groups – including school districts, law enforcement, local governments, principals, teachers and parents – in communities throughout BC to support active school travel.

Establish, support and strengthen positive relationships with partners and supporters throughout the province and across Canada.

Outreach and Business Development

Communicate ASRTS messages and concepts to diverse audiences in a variety of mediums and venues.
Promote adoption of School Travel Planning, Bike Right, Bike to School Week and other ASRTS initiatives in communities across the province.
Collaborate with HASTe partners to develop, refine and implement programs, campaigns, and other ASRTS initiatives.
Represent HASTe on committees and at events.
Develop, review and edit reports and proposals.
Stay up to date with current ASRTS trends, research, tools and resources.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Essential skills and qualifications include

Strong communication skills, with the ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively.
Strong interpersonal skills, able to rally the interest of and support from diverse stakeholders.
Demonstrated project management experience, and effective time meeting management skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Experience managing personnel, able to oversee staff and contractors.
Demonstrated experience in community engagement and group facilitation.
Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and projects.
Computer skills: word-processing, spreadsheet, PDF, email, presentation, etc.

The following skills and qualifications are a definite asset

Research experience and data analysis skills.
Creative program development experience.
Passion for and commitment to active transportation.
Experience with organizational planning and development.

Required Training, Education and Experience The ideal candidate will have a minimum 5-years combined professional and educational experience in one or more relevant fields: transportation, communications, health, planning, community engagement, project management, etc. This is a demanding position, and the candidate’s experience should reflect their ability to competently and confidently execute the duties and responsibilities listed above.

Terms, Employment & Compensation

Propose start date: Flexible; ideally March 2016

This is a full time position based in Vancouver, B.C. with compensation commensurate with skills and experience, along with benefits. HASTe provides an email address and access to a shared office space with internet access and indoor bicycle storage. The employee must have access to their own computer and cell phone for work purposes.
