The Fundraising and Communications Manager is responsible for activities in support of the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust (“ORMLT” or the “Trust”) operations, specifically in the areas of fundraising, communications and outreach, as outlined in the annual Board approved Work Plan. The position also provides support to the Volunteer Coordinator, Stewardship Manager and Land Securement Manager.
Work efforts in all program areas are intricately connected and require coordination and understanding of the strategic direction and objectives of the Trust.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Fundraising and Communications Manager is required to perform a range of duties including, but not limited to:
Fundraising
Support refinement of the Trust’s long-term fund development plans and approaches and the development of the annual Work Plan for Board approval
Lead implementation of fundraising activities as outlined in the Board approved Work Plan, including development of revenue sources, special events and a corporate sponsorship program, and as requested by the Fundraising and Outreach Committee
Draft prospect files, cases for support, funding applications and other appropriate correspondence, including thank you letters, for the Executive Director, President of the Board and other Board members to maintain and build relationships with major donors and fund granting foundations and to keep all donors and partners informed and aware of Trust activities, successes and funding requirements
Create, enhance and maintain electronic and hard copy files in support of the fundraising activities of the Trust to complement Basic Funder information
Communications and Outreach
Support refinement of the Trust’s long-term communications and outreach plans and approaches and the development of the annual Work Plan for Board approval
Lead implementation of communications and outreach activities as outlined in the Board approved Work Plan and as requested by the Fundraising and Outreach Committee
Prepare and submit Trust related articles for use in other organizations’ newsletters (Caring, Trail Talk, OLTA)
Ensure consistent application of branding and messaging across all Trust correspondence, advertising, presentations, event participation and other outreach activities
Develop and run social media and other interactive web programs to ensure that the Trust actively promotes its image, the importance of the moraine and the Trust stewardship and securement activities
For both fundraising and communications and outreach, support the Fundraising and Outreach Committee as requested by the Chair of the Committee
Stewardship and Land Securement Program Support
In support of the Stewardship Program and as requested by the Executive Director or the Stewardship Manager
Assist with funding applications and communications materials for specific stewardship activities as they arise to ensure consistency with overall fundraising and communications objectives, targets and messaging
In support of the Land Securement Program and as requested by the Executive Director or the Land Securement Manager
Develop communications and funding materials consistent with program needs and program objectives
Volunteer Management Support
In support of the Executive Director and the Volunteer Coordinator
Assist with development, implementation, and refinement of volunteer policies and procedures and recruitment and retention strategies
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Required Qualifications
The ability to communicate effectively in English is required. The position requires the ability to attend evening and weekend meetings or events and to be able to travel the extent of the Oak Ridges Moraine independently. The following requirements are provided for guidance and it is understood that the preferred candidate may not meet all specified requirements.
Education and Experience
2 or more years of experience in communications, marketing, and/or related fields with experience with public speaking and verbal presentations with a range of audiences
2 or more years of experience in fundraising, revenue and business development or related fields
Experience with public speaking and verbal presentations with a range of audiences
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated understanding of and proven skills in communications and fundraising
Demonstrated knowledge of Oak Ridges Moraine location, features, significance and provincial legislation
Demonstrated knowledge of the Land Trust movement and natural heritage protection
Demonstrated knowledge of charity and not-for-profit operations is preferred
Knowledge of special events planning and management
Knowledge of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy’s Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code
Demonstrated ability to prepare written reports and proposals
Proven oral and written presentation skills in order to communicate complex concepts in land protection and management
Proficiency in the use of computer programs for:
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel) and PowerPoint
