Your Fit:
You see the bigger picture. You have a deep appreciation and respect for the history, culture, and goals of Indigenous communities in Canada.
You love working with people. You are comfortable in many different settings and are able to appreciate individuals for their diversity and uniqueness. You enjoy meeting new people and finding ways for everyone to participate.
You understand the system. You know there are constraints and limitations, but you work towards common solutions, mutual respect and a “we’re all in this together” approach. You have an ‘above and beyond’ approach to organizational stewardship.
You love a challenge. Working hard feeds you and you find innovative and effective ways to solve problems and make progress. You’re comfortable making the hard call sometimes but you have no need to exert power.
You strive for excellence. You believe that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing right—every single time.
You can drive! You can drive a car, a cargo van, a 12-passenger vehicle, a rototiller. You can drive home a point, you can drive a project forward to its end.

The Role:
The Finance Director position is part of our leadership team at Roots – the team that collaboratively guides the overall operation of the many different aspects of Roots. Though this is a finance role with important financial responsibilities, this is still fully a role that deals with and works with people – staff, partners, participants, and community members. It is a role that pulls its weight in making larger organizational decisions and deals with HR issues. It is a role that often plays the neutral card to give and gain perspective with regards to community programs. This role is as much about community as the rest of them and isn’t above sweeping and emptying the garbage sometimes. A knowledge of issues around poverty is essential and knowing what community resources exist to support community members is an asset.

Our Approach:
At first glance, Roots Community Food Centre may appear to be an urban agriculture-focused organization, but we encourage applicants to look much deeper than that. Roots Community Food Centre is first and foremost about working with people, building belonging, finding comfort in the margins and edges, and advocating for system wide change to improve the lives of community members. We work hard to find the delicate balance between challenge and achievement in all our program and projects.
We are a small, grassroots organization that is still maturing and coming into its own. We aim to foster a culture that is transparent, inclusive, progressive, and productive. As staff, we work collaboratively, we work hard, we do what needs to be done, and we try to keep the big picture in mind.

Application:
Please submit a resume (including references) and cover letter to info@rootscfc.org and reference the job title in your email headline by Thursday, January 26th, 2023, 4pm EST.
