Director, Finance – Snuneymuxw First Nation – Nanaimo, BC

The Snuneymuxw First Nation is one of the largest bands by population in British Columbia (www.snuneymuxw.ca) and is located in the centre of Coast Salish territory on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the Fraser River. Their office is located in historical, resource rich Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN) are one of the few First Nations in Canada that has a pre-confederation Treaty with the Crown signed in 1854. Snuneymuxw’s dynamic and diverse economy reflects their engagement in new community economic development opportunities while continuing to build on the foundations of their traditional economy. Recognizing the importance of strong financial leadership and reporting when it comes to delivering the very best of services to its community, the SFN is looking to attract an accomplished Director, Finance to play an integral role in the organizations current and future direction.

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will ensure efficient processes and adequate controls are in place for the administration of financial operations across the Nation’s fourteen departments, including formulating business  strategies and recommendations which will lead to strategic financial decisions.  Responsibilities include: administering the financial affairs and operations of SFN and exercising budgetary control over all departments; supervising financial staff through capacity building and training and monitoring performance; ensuring timely monthly reporting to Chief and Council and departments, budgeting, implementing governance procedures. Additionally you will hold responsibility for risk management and internal controls while ensuring efficient use of resources and assets; liaise with external auditors and funding agencies; and review/revise SFN financial policies and procedures.

As the ideal candidate, you will have strong academic credentials that will include completion of a Canadian professional accounting designation (CGA, CA, CMA) with five (5) years’ of accounting and supervisory experience. Within this experience, you will have gained strong knowledge of accounting/financial practices and software programs (Xyntax would be ideal) combined with superior supervisory skills in mentoring, motivating, coaching and providing direction to staff members while establishing an effective team environment.  You will have successfully demonstrated excellent attention to detail, combined with analytical, time management and organizational skills.  You are recognized for your positive corporate contributions and being a catalyst for positive change.
