You are an experienced communications professional with a flair for creative writing and a passion for environmental protection. You are skilled at transforming messages about ecology, biodiversity and natural area protection into captivating plain language for print or web. As the Islands Trust Fund Communications and Fundraising Specialist you are responsible for providing the communications and fundraising support required to carry out Islands Trust Fund’s Regional Conservation Plan. In order to provide time-sensitive advice to the board and staff on high-profile issues, you will stay current with emerging conservation issues affecting the Islands Trust area.

You have successfully raised funds from private and public sources to forward government or not-for-profit work. You enjoy cultivating and maintaining relationships with donors and funders. As the Communications and Fundraising Specialist, you will identify appropriate funding opportunities, develop partnerships with stakeholders, apply for funding, and manage programs and campaigns through their entire project lifecycle.

About the Organization

The Islands Trust Fund is creating a legacy of protected areas in Canada’s islands in the Salish Sea, a scenic archipelago of 13 major islands and more than 450 smaller islands. As one of British Columbia’s leading land trusts, the Islands Trust Fund works with individuals and communities to protect special places by encouraging, undertaking, and assisting in voluntary conservation initiatives within the Islands Trust Area.

Under the Islands Trust Act, the Islands Trust Fund Board is an autonomous corporate body within the Islands Trust. The Board directs the work of the Islands Trust Fund – protecting significant natural areas by establishing nature reserves and sanctuaries and by working with landowners and partners to register conservation covenants on private lands.

Your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the following requirements:

Post-secondary degree, preferably in a communications-related field, although a degree in environmental studies (or similar) will be considered in conjunction with relevant experience.
A minimum of four years’ experience developing and implementing communication strategies, creating professional communications materials and liaising with news media. Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Experience raising funds for a public or not-for?profit agency. Proven success at grant writing and project management.
Demonstrated ability to manage communications and public engagement projects involving multiple audiences and stakeholders (e.g. citizens, staff, elected officials and contractors) using multiple methods including social media.
Exceptional writing and editing in plain language.
Expertise in using common software (Microsoft preferred) to create attractive and informative publications including formatting of webpages, presentation slides, tables, graphs and images.
Demonstrated expertise (i.e. able to coach others) in inter-personal, oral, written and web-based communication skills.
Knowledge of and concern for species and ecosystems of Canada’s islands in the Salish Sea.
