Assistant Accountant – Payroll – School District No 61 – Victoria, BC

The Greater Victoria School District provides quality, public education for approximately 19,000 students in the Greater Victoria area.  To provide this service, the District has an operating budget of $187 million and employs approximately 3,000 employees; including teachers, administrators, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and exempt managerial staff.

Reporting to the Manager, Payroll and Benefits, the Assistant Accountant is responsible for performing the audit function for 9 payrolls, processing complex payroll transactions, ensuring compliance with collective agreements and Federal and Provincial legislation as well as working on special projects.  The Assistant Accountant is also required to analyze existing payroll procedures and provide recommendations for change.  The successful applicant will have completed Level three (3) of a designated accounting program (CMA, CA or CGA) or completion of a two (2) year diploma in Business Administration specializing in Accounting.  Completion of intermediate level payroll courses is essential.

At least 2 years experience working in an automated payroll system is beneficial.  A high level of proficiency in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is required.
